SUMMARY:Peter Rutkoff/Fly Away
DESCRIPTION:
Historians Rutkoff and Scott (coauthors of New York Modern) &quot\;reject the
assertion that Africans lost their culture during the traumatic Middle
Passage\,&quot\; finding instead a rich articulation of African cultural
traditions in the cultural products of the African-American &quot\;Great
Migration of the twentieth century.&quot\; The authors follow the movement of
African-Americans from the rural South to the urban North and reveal how
profoundly &quot\;the culture of African American migrants helped define
twentieth-century urban America.&quot\; Different routes resulted in unique
cultural creations\, observable in music (the guitar-based Delta blues\,
Texas blues) and religion (most notably the growth of
Pentecostal-Holiness churches)\, all connected to aspects of West African
culture. The authors\, while attentive to necessary statistics and
succinct in general historical background\, transform the migrating
millions from an indistinguishable mass into distinct communities. As
Rutkoff and Scott take the reader to ChicagoÖs Bud Billiken Day or
HoustonÖs Juneteenth\, August WilsonÖs Pittsburgh\, or Walter MosleyÖs Los
Angeles\, &quot\;the flashes of the West African spirit that black rural
southerners brought north&quot\; are rendered visible.

SUMMARY:Melvese & Myhia\, & Myhia /Jones\, Evans\, & Knight
DESCRIPTION:
Jones\, Evans &amp\; Knight is a fictional exploration of Black America
through the lives of four women residing in Morven Town and employed at a
prestigious Black-owned law firm. The inner working of a law firm is no
different than any other corporate atmosphere\, but Larenz Jones and
Preston Evans (two of the Partners at JEK) were adamant about addressing
the needs and concerns of their support staff. They understood the
staff's views clearly enough to furnish a large office with a
television\, cozy seating and a fridge. It became the perfect place for
the employees to escape and relax for a dose of emergency relief\, hence
the nickname the ER. However\, there was one partner (Earl Knight) that
had a different view on the staff's obligations to the firm. Earl
believed that employees should do whatever the attorney asked without
question and it was evident in the way he treated his secretary\,
Katherine Rowland. He created a chaotic office environment and her
stress was compounded as she struggled to raise three children with an
absent husband. Kat would not be able to endure the day without her
friends-Trisha Ramsey\, the outspoken woman that encourages those around
her to be strong and true to themselves\; Darleen Reese\, the gossip Queen
at JEK\, who tells everyone's business except her own (and she has a few
stories hidden)\; and Naomi Rouge\, a woman that breezed into Morven Town
in search of a place to rest when she stumbled into a position as
receptionist at JEK (but no one knows where she came from and Naomi
isn't offering any information). Let these ladies show you what
friendship is all about as they laugh\, cry\, share secrets\, work\, learn\,
dine\, and party together.

SUMMARY:Ron Chepesiuk/Sergeant Smack
DESCRIPTION:
Sergeant Smack chronicles the story of North Carolina's Leslie &quot\;Ike&quot\;
Atkinson\, an adventurer\, gambler and one of U.S. history's most original
gangsters. Under the cover of the Vietnam War and through the use of
the U.S. military infrastructure\, Atkinson masterminded an enterprising
group of family members and former African American GIs that the DEA
identified as one of history's ten top drug trafficking rings. Ike's
organization moved heroin from Thailand to North Carolina and beyond.
According to law enforcement sources\, 1\,000 pounds is a conservative
estimate of the amount of heroin the ring transported annually from
Bangkok\, Thailand\, through U.S. military bases\, into the U.S. during its
period of operation from 1968 to 1975. That amount translates to about
$400 million worth of illegal drug sales during that period. Born in
Goldsboro\, North Carolina\, Ike Atkinson is a charismatic former U.S.
Army Master Sergeant\, career drug smuggler\, scam artist\, card shark and
doting family man whom law enforcement nick-named Sergeant Smack. He was
never known to carry a gun\, and today many retired law enforcement
officials who had put him in jail refer to him as a &quot\;gentleman.&quot\;
Sergeant Smack's criminal activities sparked the creation of a special
DEA unit code named CENTAC 9\, which conducted an intensive three-year
investigation across three continents. Sergeant Smack was elusive\, but
the discovery of his palm print on a kilo of heroin finally took him
down. In 1987\, Ike tried to revive his drug ring from Otisville Federal
Penitentiary\, but the Feds discovered the plot and set up a sting. The
events that follow seem like the narrative for a Robert Ludlum novel.
Atkinson was convicted again and nine years added to his sentence. Ike
was released from prison in 2006 after serving a 31-year jail sentence.
Atkinson's story is controversial because his ring has been accused of
smuggling heroin to the U.S. in the coffins and/or cadavers of dead
American GIs. As this book shows\, the accusation is completely false.
The recent movie\, &quot\;American Gangster\,&quot\; which depicted the criminal
career of Frank Lucas\, distorted Atkinson's historical role in the
international drug trade. Sergeant Smack exposes the lies about the Ike
Atkinson-Frank Lucas relationship and documents how Ike\, not Lucas\,
pioneered the Asian heroin connection. &quot\;Drug kingpin Ike Atkinson\, is
the real deal\, and not the stuff of Hollywood legend. The author
delivers an eminently readable book about a genuine Mr Big who knows
that no fictional makeover is required for his compelling story - the
truth is more than enough.&quot\; -Steve Morris\, Publisher\, New Criminologist
&quot\;Sergeant Smack is meticulously researched and its prodding for the
truth by author Ron Chepesiuk makes it an excellent non-fiction crime
story. Along with a compelling history of Ike Atkinson's life and
criminal career in drug smuggling\, the author has managed to put the
truth to numerous falsehoods contained in the major movie\, American
Gangster\, about the life of Frank Lucas.&quot\; -Jack Toal\, retired DEA agent
who worked the investigation of Frank Lucas &quot\;Finally\, the real story.
I've waited 40 years for this book.&quot\; -Marc Levin\, Director of the
documentary\, &quot\;Mr. Untouchable&quot\; &quot\;Ron Chepesiuk has gone from publishing
the Black gangster classics\, Gangsters of Harlem and Black Gangsters of
Chicago\, to crafting Sergeant Smack\, an astonishing masterpiece.&quot\; -David
&quot\;Pop&quot\; Whetstone\, Owner\, Black Star Music and Video &quot\;Sergeant Smack
forcefully debunks the urban legend of Black family groups smuggling
heroin from Southeast Asia in the bodies of dead GI soldiers while
recounting the colorful saga of the authentic American gangster. Highly
recommended.&quot\; -Gary Taylor\, journalist and author of the award-winning
true crime memoir\, Luggage by Kroger.

SUMMARY:Jeffrey Ogbar/The Harlem Renaissance Revisited
DESCRIPTION:

This volume provides new historical and literary insights into the
Harlem Renaissance\, returning attention to it not only as a broad
expression of artistic work but also as a movement that found catharsis
in art and hope in resistance.

By examining such major figures of
the era as Jessie Fauset\, Paul Robeson\, and Zora Neale Hurston\, the
contributors reframe our understanding of the interplay of art\,
politics\, culture\, and society in 1920s Harlem. The fourteen essays
explore the meaning and power of Harlem theater\, literature\, and art
during the period\; probe how understanding of racial\, provincial\, and
gender identities originated and evolved\; and reexamine the
sociopolitical contexts of this extraordinary black creative class.
Delving into these topics anew\, The Harlem Renaissance Revisited
reconsiders the national and international connections of the movement
and how it challenged clichA(c)d interpretations of sexuality\, gender\,
race\, and class. The contributors show how those who played an integral
role in shattering stereotypes about black creativity pointed the way
toward real freedom in the United States\, in turn sowing some of the
seeds of the Black Power movement.

A fascinating chapter in the
history of the African American experience and New York City\, the
cultural flowering of the Harlem Renaissance reverberates today. This
thought-provoking combination of social history and intellectual art
criticism opens this powerful moment in history to renewed and dynamic
interpretation and sharper discussion.

SUMMARY:Erika Lopez/The Girl Must Die\: A Monster Girl Memoir
DESCRIPTION:

&quot\;This is for the Real McCoy Monster Girls--not because they WANT to
be--but because they need to be. For some it's a calling\, their actions
directed by an unknown force. For others\, it's in their blood. The DNA
that has been passed down from The Beginning of Time\, back when tiny
people lived in transistor radios\, vaginas had teeth\, and Neanderthal
Monster Girls squatted through The First Supper\, leading to the tantrums
and quiet tensions of post-modern dinner tables of today.&quot\;

&quot\;This
is for the ones who must white-knuckle it through polite society. We eat
sugar-free nothing\, for we &quot\;are&quot\; sugar\: Granular. Unrefined. Evil.
There's no &quot\;on/off&quot\; switch\, no safety net\, no do-overs or practice
throws. You have one chance\, and one chance only\, like a fearless
tightrope walker. One mis-step and you'll plummet into the gorge of
mediocrity.&quot\;Erika Lopez wrote books like &quot\;Flaming Iguanas&quot\; for Simon
&amp\; Schuster before she hit the skids and ended up on welfare. Some
say it's because she's mean. Some say it's because she's loud. Some say
it's because she told people to get her books at the library.
Regardless\, she's back and taking her rightful place at the head of the
rickety kid's table with the prettiest little brick of a book she's ever
made. Its existence is a metaphor for coming out of hell clutching a
handful of flowers. It's about white-knuckling it through a seemingly
endless tour of The Abyss\, and realizing that whatever doesn't kill you
will eventually turn you on.
